Discover Park Square Leeds

Park Square is a small area of parkland found in the heart of Leeds, West Yorkshire. It's incredibly picturesque with green lawns, flowers and shrubbery, and sophisticated Georgian architecture on the periphery. Many of these buildings serve as offices for barristers and solicitors and the park. With the square’s shaded benches and close proximity to cafes and restaurants selling takeout, it offers these workers the perfect place for a daily lunch or coffee break.

The History of Park Square Leeds

In the late 18th century the buildings surrounding Park Square in Leeds were inhabited by the city’s elite, and the square was created for them to use as a private garden. Crafted with precision and foresight, this area – part of the Park’s Estate development – preferred terminology like 'Row,' 'Parade,' 'Place,' and 'Square,' as opposed to ‘street’.

As a residential area, Park Square was the home of many historical figures like Dr. Edith Pechey, an advocate for women's rights and medical practitioner. Her residence at No. 8 epitomised the square's stature as the 'Harley Street of the North’. It also witnessed many aspects of social history from Eliza Stafford's plight in 1865 to the 1889 labour strife at Arthur & Co.

However, the growth of commerce escalated in 1878 signifying the area's transformation from a residential area into Leeds' financial and business district.

St. Paul’s House: Among the many buildings gracing Park Square, St. Paul's House is a true gem. Originally constructed in 1878 the building is a wonderful example of ornate Hispano-Moorish design, crafted by the skilled hand of architect Thomas Ambler. Designated as a Grade II* listed building, St. Pauls House underwent extensive restoration in 1976, preserving its architectural splendour for posterity. Today, it serves as the premises for DAC Beachcroft LLP, embodying a seamless blend of historical charm and contemporary functionality since May 2015.
