Cuppage Terrace

Singapore

Singapore's charming Cuppage Terrace is the al-fresco diner's paradise, and offers a diverse tapestry of international cuisines and lively nightlife.

What is Cuppage Terrace?

Cuppage Terrace, located in the Orchard Road district, is a charming showcase of Singapore’s diverse culinary landscape. Along the bustling promenade you can tuck into anything from Mexican and Lebanese, to Japanese and Italian. The plethora of al-fresco and indoor dining options are made up of restored Peranakan shop houses. Each one has a lively ambiance that beckons both locals and tourists to embark on a gastronomic journey through the different restaurants, bars, and lounges.

The Origins of Cuppage Terrace

Both Cuppage Terrace and Cuppage Road running off Orchard Road are named after William Cuppage who, after working his way up, became the Acting PostMaster General in 1856. In the 1850s William acquired a plantation in the area, which after his death passed to his daughter. In the following years the land changed hands several times before the buildings were flattened and replaced with Peranakans. Rightly so, the area became known as a Peranakan enclave and was given conservation protection in 1989, alongside Emerald Hill and Cairnhill, by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore. Today, the series of ‘Cuppage’ avenues lined with unique buildings are a wonderful use of the former Straits Chinese shop houses.

Designing Cuppage Terrace

Cuppage Terrace is made up of 17 Malacca-style terrace houses that were erected between 1905-07 by Boey Lian Chin. Originally built to accommodate the burgeoning middle class seeking respite from heavy congestion in the city centre, these two-storey houses showcase a distinctive uniform layout, complete with full-height French windows on the upper floors, unique arched openings, moveable jalousies, and glazed fan-lights. The inclusion of five-foot ways on the ground floor, a hallmark of colonial-era architecture, adds to its charm.

Following a comprehensive redevelopment by the URA in 1976, Cuppage Terrace was repurposed for commercial use. Readapting the charming terrace houses into commercial spaces was a first in the area as most of the surrounding buildings were demolished. The further pedestrianisation of Cuppage Road in the 1980s transformed Cuppage Terrace into a vibrant evening hub, featuring an array of cafes, restaurants, and bars, making it a popular destination in Singapore as well as a truly historical architectural showpiece.

The Al-Fresco Experience

Cuppage Terrace is renowned for its al-fresco dining experience, allowing guests to dine under the open sky in the midst of busy, futuristic Singapore. Lined with an eclectic mix of establishments, the terrace exudes a lively energy, making it an ideal setting for both casual gatherings and more intimate occasions.

Dining at Cuppage Terrace

As the sun sets, Cuppage Terrace transforms into a tapestry of flavours and aromas. What really sets Cuppage Terrace apart from other dining al-fresco experiences in Singapore is the diversity of culinary offerings that cater to every palate. From authentic Japanese cuisine and contemporary Western fare to traditional Chinese delights and innovative fusion dishes, the terrace presents visitors with a catalogue of choice that reflects the city’s status as a melting pot of cultures. Each restaurant brings its own unique twist to dishes, creating a symphony of tastes that caters to the diverse palates of Singapore's cosmopolitan crowd.

Japanese Delights

For lovers of Japanese cuisine, Cuppage Terrace is a haven. Renowned Japanese restaurants along the terrace serve up a delectable array of sushi, sashimi, takoyaki, and robatayaki. After sampling the freshest (and thus tastiest!) ingredients, prepared with ultimate precision, it will feel as though you’ve been transported straight to Osaka; the food capital of Japan.

The space is dotted with bars and lounges that cater to those seeking a fun nightlife experience. From sophisticated cocktail bars to laid-back pubs, patrons can unwind with a diverse selection of beverages while enjoying the upbeat energy of their surroundings. The cocktail bars are especially cool – mixologists craft innovative cocktails that blend flavours from around the world, offering a twist on your drinking experience. It's a place where a simple sip from a well-crafted cocktail becomes a journey through the global directory of taste and flavour.

Becoming a Social Hub

Amidst the culinary and nightlife extravagance, Cuppage Terrace manages to maintain a laid-back charm. The al-fresco setting, coupled with a variety of seating options, creates an atmosphere that is both lively and relaxed. It's an ideal spot for those looking to unwind after a day of shopping or exploring the nearby attractions. And so, the conglomeration of bars and restaurants have evolved beyond being a mere dining destination; it has become a social hub where people gather to celebrate, connect, and create memories with loved ones. Whether it's a casual dinner with friends, a romantic date night, or a lively evening of drinks and laughter, Cuppage Terrace accommodates a spectrum of social experiences.
